Neelkanth Mahadev Distance from Rishikesh
There are three ways up to Neelkanth Mahadev: a private taxi, a seat in a shared taxi, or the old pilgrim path on foot. There is no bus. This guide explains each one honestly, then covers the temple timings, the trek, and how to handle the Sawan and Shivratri crowds. By road the temple is about 22–32 km from Rishikesh, roughly a 1 to 1.5 hour drive.
How to Reach Neelkanth: Taxi, Shared Taxi or Trek
There is no bus service to Neelkanth. By road, the only way up is a taxi, either your own car or a seat in a shared taxi. Both are round trip only, so the same vehicle brings you back down. Or you can walk the old pilgrim path.
How to reach Neelkanth Mahadev from Rishikesh, in short: book a full cab (₹2,500 round trip), take a seat in a shared taxi (₹300 per person, round trip), or walk the 12–14 km pilgrim path from Swarg Ashram. By road it takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.
Full private cab
Cost: ₹2,500 round trip for the whole car (up to 6-7 people)
- Pros: pickup from your hotel, leave when you want, the driver waits while you do darshan, and you can add stops like Patna Waterfall on the way back. Easiest option with kids or elders.
- Cons: costs more than a shared seat if you're travelling alone or as a couple.
Shared taxi
Cost: ₹300 per person, round trip
- Pros: cheapest way up by road, with a seat and return ride guaranteed. Ideal for solo travellers and couples.
- Cons: fixed departure times and a shared car, so there are no extra stops and you return with the group.
Trek (on foot)
Cost: free
- Pros: the traditional pilgrim route, through forest and away from traffic. It starts behind Swarg Ashram near Ram Jhula and is about 12-14 km uphill, taking 4-6 hours for most people.
- Cons: steep and rocky in places, with little shade or water. Not for small children, elders, or anyone with knee trouble. Start by 6 AM, and plan your way back down before you set out. The walk down is quicker than the climb.
Neelkanth Temple Timings & Best Time to Visit

Timings shift a little with season and festivals.
Best time to visit
- October to March: cool, clear and the most peaceful. Carry a jacket for early mornings.
- April to June: busy with families. Leave Rishikesh by 6:30 AM to beat the heat and the queue.
- July to August: monsoon and Sawan. Expect landslides, closures and huge crowds.
- Any day: weekday mornings are always quieter than weekends.
The Neelkanth Trek: Walking the Old Pilgrim Path
Before the road was built, every pilgrim walked to Neelkanth, and many still do. The path starts behind Swarg Ashram, near Ram Jhula and Parmarth Niketan, and climbs through the forest of the Rajaji buffer zone.
Distance and time
About 12–14 km one way. Most people take 4–6 hours to go up, and the walk down is quicker.
Difficulty
Moderate to steep, with dirt paths, rocky stretches and some steps. There is little shade and few water points after the first hour.
Who should walk it
Fit adults and keen hikers. It isn't suitable for small children, elders, or anyone with knee or heart trouble. They should go up by taxi.
- Start by 6 AM to finish the climb before the midday heat.
- Carry at least 2 litres of water, a snack and a light rain layer.
- Walk in a group, and stay on the main path. This is elephant and leopard country.
- Plan how you'll get back down before you set out.
Sawan & Shivratri: Crowd Tips
Neelkanth is one of the biggest stops on the Kanwar Yatra. During Sawan (July-August) and on Maha Shivratri (February/March), lakhs of devotees come in a few days. It's an incredible atmosphere, but plan for it:
- Roads may close to cars. Police often stop private vehicles well before the temple on peak days, so expect to walk the last few kilometres. Check the day's traffic plan with us before you leave.
- Go very early or on a weekday. Being in the queue by 5-6 AM makes a big difference, and Mondays in Sawan are the most crowded of all.
- Travel light. Carry water, some cash, and your phone in a zipped pocket. Leave big bags in the car or at your hotel.
- Elders and young kids: consider a visit just before or after the festival days instead. Darshan is just as meaningful, and much safer.
- Agree on a meeting point with your group and driver, because mobile networks often jam in the crowd.
